CANM MISSION

To promote the field of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring and foster the development of the profession through education and certification, so as to provide optimum patient care

Neurophysiological Monitoring in Canada

Welcome to the home of the Canadian Association of Neurophysiological Monitoring (CANM). Established in 2008, CANM is a medical association dedicated to promoting the field and profession of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) in Canada. IOM is an evolving field of allied healthcare, vital to protecting the nervous system of patients undergoing surgery. This crucial adjunct to perioperative procedures is progressively becoming embraced by surgical teams across the country. Evidence supporting the clinical use of IOM has resulted in increasing demand for IOM staff and services across Canada. There are many paths to becoming an intraoperative neuromonitorist in Canada. Most neuromonitorists have come either from EEG/EMG technology backgrounds or university programs that emphasize the biological sciences. Others have come from anaesthesia or nursing backgrounds. Currently, there is no formal training program, most are trained on the job. Therefore, over the next few years CANM will enact a comprehensive education and accreditation initiative that includes online learning modules, establishment of standards, and a CANM accreditation examination. We anticipate that this innovative strategy will advance best practices in our growing field.
